Hi all --

My '87 V20 350ci 3/4 ton pickup needs a new power brake booster and master cylinder.

How's the quality of the parts from the local auto parts stores (AutoZone, Napa, O'Reilly's, etc) compared to OEM parts?  I'm concerned about buying auto parts store mechanicals because I've been burned by them in the past (like clutch slave cylinders and power steering boxes).

I think I can still get Chevrolet NOS parts from a local dealership, but it's a bit of a drive and if there's no reason to spend the extra $$ for OEM parts then I'll just pick them up from a local parts store.

Please, your wisdom is requested.  I appreciate all comments and suggestions.

Jeff

I'm sure everyone here has an opinion on this subject, based on his/her experience.  Here are my thoughts, based on many years working service at a full line GMC dealership:
1) OEM parts fulfill the original build specs
2) most aftermarket parts are, theoretically, copies of OEM parts and specs
3) some aftermarket parts improve on OEM design
4) aftermarket inventory often condenses similar designs into a single replacement part (not necessarily a bad thing)
5) occasionally, aftermarket parts are constructed/assembled with inferior materials, techniques, workmanship (don't meet OEM specs) - more of a problem with recon parts
6) the aftermarket thrives when the OE downsizes older inventory (typically after 5-7 yrs, up to about 12 yrs)

Personally, I prefer to purchase new, unless I O/H a component myself - I avoid rebuilt parts when possible.

Some general thoughts on how to choose:
A) do some research (like you're doing here) - weigh availability against cost/warranty/quality/consequences of subsequent failure/etc
B) what's the cost of replacing the particular part a second time, should it fail?
C) look at the recon part before you buy, paying close attention to details of workmanship and appearance
D) how does the part affect the safety & usability of the vehicle?
E) who is going to be driving the vehicle?
F) what kind of lifespan do you need from the part?
G) what caused the part to fail?
H) what does your experience tell you (what's your comfort zone with the seller and the part you're buying)?
and so on....

You will likely be fine buying from any seller you mentioned (I've purchased from all of them), just consider the foregoing criteria to help with your decision process.  Don't forget to check out the store on this website, too.   :)

BD is correct in what he said.  The reason for after market parts.
1:  They build the parts cheaper and sell them ( not always with inferior parts, but sometimes yes ) to make money.
2:  As mentioned, the original manufacture has moved on and is no longer making the parts, so someone has to ( these parts tend to be as good if not better than the original )
3:  On rare occasions, the after market has actually improved on a design and made it stronger or better somehow, and therefor offers a better product to consumers.

As BD said, do your homework.  With something as important as a brake master cylinder and booster, I would check to see where the part is manufactured ( after market and dealer.  Just cause you can buy something from a dealer does not mean it was made here in USA.  I would avoid china making important stuff because their steel quality is sub standard of ours. )
Also as stated, after doing your homework, the end result is you are buying it and you have to live with it so make sure you are happy with it.

I appreciate all of the good advice.  Some I had already though about, others not so much.

I ended up trying to buy a loaded JB7 master cylinder / booster combo from Napa but it turns out they didn't have any in stock in Arizona.  But as a bonus I was able to get the parts separate within a couple of hours.  The M/C is new, and the booster has new seals and perishable parts.

I'm looking forward to getting this installed.  I bought the truck in 2002 and it's never had great brakes, even after swapping in discs in the rear.  I noticed that the pedal slowly drops with pressure on it ... and the kicker is it's always been that way.  I'm assuming I'll have more brakes than I ever had.

A year or so ago I bought a Power Bleeder since I work on all of my own vehicles (I have 4).  It will make short work of bleeding the new system.  Thumbs up!

I am sure your brakes will be better than you are used to, now you just have to get used to having them on your truck.
