manual trans question for my 83 2wd stepside
« on: December 24, 2011, 06:20:09 pm »
i just got the new classic truck mag the other day, and had a tech article about putting a t5 trans in to a 60s era truck, i saw also how they got the t5 to work by switching the tail shaft wit one from a s-10 t5, my question is has anyone tried to put this type of trans in a truck from 73-87? is it worth doing? i have a 350, that makes 350 horse, i know not much, but wondered also will the t5 be OK with the motor I'm going to be using? the trans i currently have is a  New Process 833 four-speed OD was wondering if the t5 is even a better idea or should i just keep what i have, i dint plan to race the truck, i do plan to take it out and have fun with it, on occasion beat on it a lil, (like I'm sure we all do at some point) also if you have any pics of one of these in your truck or a build thread of one going in, or even an idea on how to switch the tail shafts (I'm still a Lil foggy on that even after reading the article on how to do it) would be great, thanks for any pics and links and info you can give

I know it is possible, I looked at a 75 c10 in sac that had the t-5 trans in it, the owner had swapped vins ( the truck was an 81 to 87 because of the front and everything else I found, he just changed vins so no smog would have to be done on it), so I didn't get very far into questions when I found out he just slapped a 75 vin on a truck that was suppose to be smoged.  ( transfer's in Cal. can be tricky if the paper work is not all in order )

I have heard they won't hold up behind much of a V-8.  http://www.inliners.org/Jack/t5_page.html  gives you gear ratios, the positive is a little steeper 1st gear but OD will be about the same give or take a little.
