Glass packs in California ?
« on: January 02, 2012, 05:36:50 pm »

Does anyone know if it legal to run Glasspacks or Cherrybombs with a monitory California Catalytic Converter ?

Knowing California they probably have a decibel limit but I doubt they have a meter to measure it.  I know Indiana has a law and that was the case for us.  My son was taking it real easy through town at 1am and our local Barney Fife pulled him over and gave him a warning ticket, it just wasn't worth fighting is so I put a quiet muffler on the truck.

I have a cherry bomb on mine and got a warning for 'noise pollution' once but I think he was just having a rough day. Ours is a db rating and they are always pulling over motorcycles and teenagers with subwoofers. When in doubt pull up beside a police officer and ask him...that's what I do.

I was curious cause when I was with a M/C going to a rally the pipes they ran was as loud or loader then any packs I ever heard. And I us to run them on my 65 Chevy Impala back in the day. Love the old school sound !

California has a noise law that states, between 10 PM and 5 AM, noise is not suppose to exceed a certain decibel count. Yes you are right, I have been on lots of runs that you could not hear anything for a block because of the Harley's pipes going down a main street in a small town.
Cop's can give you a hard time, but if they give a ticket in the day time, it will not hold up in court, as long as you have the appropriate smog equipment on.

I used to run Cherrybombs on a 340 Dart.  They sounded nice, not too loud, until I reached the resonate frequency of the exhaust, then they sounded GREAT!  Was never hassled by anyone (Central Calif).  So Barney lives in your County now, huh Zieg?   :D

We have a whole force of them.  It is a fairly quiet little town and they all congregate at the local Family Express Gas station to smoke and joke and just wait for someone to come by that they can hassle.

What is a monitory California cat?

Bake, that is a myth...there is no time block for quiet times. just in county, state, and national parks. In city limits, if it bothers someone, regardless of the time, its unlawful. PC 415.

I found a set at the Pick-n-pull in Rocklin for $11.50 each. How much louder would they be running them with a Catalytic Converter?

I don't think the Catalytic Converter would make them louder, if any thing I would think they might dampen the sound just a bit.

I should have been more specific, Marvin is in Sac.  I should have said the city of Sac has an ordance.  This is taken from the Sac City Police Q & A board.  ( The times are from when I asked a Sac Police officer )
What laws and regulations exist to protect the public from excessive and annoying noise?
The City of Sacramento has ordinances, or laws that are in effect within the City limits, that regulate noise in the city. The city regulates noise based on the type of noise, loudness, duration and time of day.

cats will dampen the noise level removing them will make them even louder.

I dont know about ca laws but here locally when have sound laws but vehicles fall under a different set of rules while on the road ways parking lots and private property revert back to standard noise law. Radios cannot be heard from so many feet away from the vehicle.

i also had a barney with a baby sitter in my town. but he never gave me a $200 ticket for kicking up dust on a gravel street after it hadn't rained in over a month in the summer! but runing headers with 2 1/2 inch stainless steel strait pipes with chery bombs flush with the back of the cab probably didnt help! ;D

If you're running a cat and cherry bomb, you won't get much difference out of it. I've tried.
I ditched my cat and put in dual exhaust and a set of thrush turbos, makes the truck sound pretty mean. But then again i'm in Northwestern Ontario, cops don't pay much attention to loud trucks here since it's kind of a common thing. As long as you aren't running it with open headers and not making it obnoxiously loud.
