Unhappy with lowered ride quality
« on: January 03, 2012, 10:16:46 pm »
I lowered my truck last summer. 4/6 drop. Front consisting of 2'' Spindles and 2'' Belltech Coils. Rear is a flip kit, lowering shackles at the bottom hole (1'' drop) and a bolt-in C-Notch.

I am running Doetsch Tech shocks all around.

Tires are B/F Radial T/A set at 35 PSI all around. Front 255/60/15 Rear 275/60/15

I have read some people say their ride was bouncy after lowering. Some say harsh. Mine is harsh. The truck chatters your teeth over bumps and imperfections in the road. I live in Connecticut, so the roads are pretty awful to say the least due to the harsh winters and plow trucks.

The front concerns me. I have included a pic of the shock travel. Does this seem right? Looks like there is not much travel. These are the shocks that were recommended for my drop from Sport Truck Direct. They are Doetsch-Tech Part# 4052G

For the rear, I just ordered some Western Chassis shock relocation brackets to get them at a better angle which may help.

Any other suggestions?

Have you shortened or relocated the bump stops?  If not that's more than likely whats causing the harsh ride.

In the front yes... for the rear as mentioned I have a c-notch.

I have 2" belltech springs as well paired with monroe stock replacement shocks and it rides like a dream. Does the suspension feel stiffer in the front or rear? How many leafs on the rear spring pack I am running 4, I removed 3. The belltech springs are a little thicker than stock so they should stiffen the suspension slightly but the stock is too soft- IMO.

The stock replacements actually fit? If that is the case, I will just run stock replacement KYB front and rear. I just received my rear shock relocation brackets so I will give those a shot.

It seems more harsh in the front over lots of bumps. It's like the suspension is not following the bumps, just plowing over it. Stock 4 leaf pack not including the overload spring.

I have been experimenting with tire pressures. I was running 35 all around. I recently dropped to 32 and notice a better ride. Also, the tires were wearing a bit too much in the center so the lower pressure seems to be a step in the right direction overall. I wonder if I should try dropping even lower to maybe 30 or even 28?

I run my tires at 32psi- they wear even and ride nice.
Measure the body of your shock that is on the truck now and get a measurement from your local parts store before you order anything more-looking at your pic; it does look really short.
Also make sure your springs are seated properly.

you can put a zip tie around the shaft of the shock to see if its bottoming out. or if the bump stop is bottoming. I think the shock valving may be too stiff for your taste. Stiff shock valving is as bad or worse than bottoming the stopps to the driver, but it really helps in the twisties with body roll.
