what year is my truck (first timer)
« on: January 08, 2012, 11:12:31 am »
i have what i believe is a 79 or 80  the title says its a 82 ... its a short wide 2wd, with a 454,th400 with 12 bolt 308 posi. dual tanks, power windows and door locks, tilt colum, air cond, no cruize, and has the cab back molding....  but it has round head lights with the 79-80 big bezels... the cowl does not have provisions for hinges like the 81-87 and has the fabric head liner. and the dash pad is the old style also... it can not be an 82, im assuming it is a silverado.... the vin# is 2GCCC14D1C1119319 matching the title.  can anybody help me identify this truck before i tear it down..... would there be any numbers on the chassis that may help?   there is no tag on the firewall

From your vin# it is an 81.  Is the vin in the dash instead on on the door post.  I believe in 78/79 they switched to in the dash vin#'s.
As far as the other parts you mentioned, someone could have switched most of them over from other trucks, a lot of parts will switch back and forth.
Also welcome to the site from California.

yes the vin is in the dash. the body dont seem to be molested, it actually has the original paint.  didnt the 81 have the hood hinges thru the cowl??  mine dont have the slots in the cowl where they would go

Up to 1980 had 13 digit VINs. 1981+ have 17 digit VINs.

Look at your VIN tag on the dash. If it has a six sided flower shaped stainless steel pop rivet it us probably original. If the pop rivet is round or aluminum, or replaced by a screw, I would suspect it to have been changed.

Maybe this web site can help:

Verticle in 73 - 80 only.  Sounds like maybe the cab, or the whole truck has been swapped out or someone just took the vin# and put it on another truck.  Can you post any pics so we can see what you are talking about.

The hydroboost set up would lead me to think it was a diesel originally. Are the filler necks wide open, or do they have the flapper?
Sounds to me like someone swapped VIN#s for some reason or another. There is supposed to be VIN#s on the frame right under the drivers floor board but I have yet to find them on any frames I have sand blasted and painted.

The 77 frame I just did had a partial vin # up where the steering box mounts on the inside of frame.

Frankenstein...Im curious why the VIN says 81, but title says 82...

Sounds like a 73-80 cab and interior.

the gas filler is not for a deisel.. but why the hydroboost brakes??  the whole truck to me seems like a 79 or 80 silverado except for the vin tag..... Mass needs a title on everything on the road

the reason it would have hydro-boost is it has the heavy suspension package aka 1-ton my truck has that so that could help and for pictures go to photobucket and make a account and upload them there then get the IMG code copy paste it in the post

Short beds weren't available in 1 ton.
Only GMs I've seen with hydro boostthat were not 1 ton is diesel pickups, and full size wagons including gas jobs.
