It is possible to shorten the steering column (there is a ton of work involved), I have seen it done, do you have a tilt steering column in your truck already ?

Welcome from NW Indiana. Been there done that. There are 3 things that help shy of custom work of the steering column. I have found the bench seat out of a 1990-91 Suburban sits the lowest and has a fairly narrow seat back giving more room. Tilt wheel with a smaller steering wheel. I have had many seat combos and this gives the most room of them all.

I just swapped a tilt column into my 84 pickup and just to see how it felt, I slid the column forward an inch or so and used washers to pinch the steering column bracket to the dash bolts instead of having them go through the bracket. I think I like the column forward that much so I might fab up some brackets to mount it there permantly. Maybe you could do that with yours? loosen the clamp on the front side of the firewall and undo the two nuts securing the column to the dash and move it ahead a little and see how it is.
