my neighbor has a 1980 reg long box 2wd with a 3 on the tree is that rare? never seen a square body with that

No not rare, a lot of trucks 2wd long box came that way.

yeah that was pretty common back in the 70s, and early 80s. in line 6 cylinders were more common than V8s but there was still allot of them too.
