1986 C-10 SWB

I figured I'd post some pics of my work in progress. It's my baby. The truck I always wanted. I have some original pictures...somewhere... I'll post them up later. I picked it up almost 2 years ago from the original owner for $500. He parked it due to a slow transmission leak but it runs fine. I haven't done too much so far but as my dad says 'it doesn't eat'. Edelbrock intake, Holley carb, cherry bomb muffler. My audio system cost me more then the truck but that's me.... It's a Kenwood deck, memphis 1000 watt amp and 2 JL 13tw5's behind the seat (they beat so hard without any interior mod). Right now I am prepping for paint and so far it is my least favorite part but I know when I get done it will feel good knowing I did it. For now a good coat of epoxy primer and I can put her back on the road. The over all plan is air suspension. Black paint with a thick white stripe around and a thin white stripe around the bottom (kinda like a converse chuck). I also want to get an electric back window and the one piece door windows (I love those). I'm thinking 22's with big star rims (again like the shoes-- they are my favorite).  It's a garage project but I hope to make like new...someday.

Got one of my fenders done, one door and a section of the bed. I have a week and a half to get it done. My dad's friend owns a body shop and he said he would spray down the primer for me. I cant afford to have it down professionally so this is my best shot. Day and night... my back is killing me. It's going to be worth it. Which brings me to be the reason I am posting. Taking that door handle off was a nightmare at the end of which I did a search and found this....

      Ah yes, the search button.  If more people would make it their friend they could find a lot more answer's.  This site is full of information.

Quick guidance question.... I have been hitting the rough spots(scratched etc.) with 80 grit and the rest of the truck with 300...does that sound right? Also I dont need to take it all the way to the metal, just smooth to the touch, right? a little reassurance would be appreciated...

I used 80 grit to quickly feather bad areas out etc.... and used 320 before I primed.

You do not need to take it all the way to the metal and you may only need to primer just bare metal spots. Many people believe that original paint that is still in good shape is good enough to be considered primer.
Regardless, before you apply the actual color paint, you want the surface in pretty smooth condition. A lot of it depends on what type of paint you're using, how good of a painter you are and how good of quality you want.
My project is no show truck and it will be used for a work truck, hunting rig, etc.... I sanded with 320-400 before paint and I'm happy with it. Some people use 600 before paint. Once you have it to 400 it doesn't take much time to go one stage finer if you choose.

I will post up some pics tonight but I just finished the sanding....WOOHOO... The plan has changed a little. My dad's friend says he has some extra flat black paint and, if I want, he would paint it...sooooo... flat black it is. My mind has been racing all night and I am going all the way in. I have a plan to make my own grill. I have some extra bumpers and the little square mirrors. Painting them all black. I dont want any chrome (for now) I'm keeping all my chrome and trim for later plans. I talked to my 7 year old and he was saying ' why not green dad?' so green accents and rims. I am also making a flip kit and droping the front to match. I am going to rip out the interior to the bare bones and paint anything I can inside black, seat cover and dash cover(until I can afford new ones). My only concern is the door panels but I'll cross that road when I get to it. I'm so excited. I'm am trailering her over on Saturday so it wont be long and she will be back on the road-- just extra mean looking...fingers crossed.

door panels are easy to repaint. when i did mine on my old 80 i sanded them down and primed the daylights out of them with cheep walmart primer and put like 3 coats of cheep walmart paint on them and they turned out pretty nice for less than 10 bucks!

Thanks for the info. I don't know why but I was thinking 'you can't paint carpet'. Then I thought to myself 'dummy you can just take that bottom panel off'.... I guess it is a Silverado package, I could be wrong, everything is electric and it had a TON of trim all of it. That bottom panel doesn't really cover anything does it? I am trying to get that mean rat rod look... I keep getting more ideas. I'm supposed to working but I can't seem to concentrate..lol. Thanks again, I'm gonna try and get back to work before my boss comes looking for me

The carpeted section on the bottom of the doors will come off, it was an option.  You will just have holes from the trim screws.

Here are some pictures... I couldn't figure out how to put them in any order. But I have interior and all my sanding work. I find a post of the captains about removing that piece between the hood and windshield (cowl i think) and did that. I just finished my first attempt at dent removal on some blowout fender damage. Those are on my phone so I will post them next. All I have left is to sand the one fender again and pull most of the bolts out of the bed. The shop is in Huntsville (about an hour away)... so I want to be as prepped as possible.
