Easy way to check for vortex heads is the intake .manifold bolt patern. The vortecs only use 8 bolts(2 on each corner)

Casting numbers ending in '062 or 906.
Good reading. (Capt. posted a link in another thread to the SD Vortecs, already reworked and new) http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56505

As said above the easiest way is to count the intake bolts

Vortecs have 4 per side were everything else has 6

There is lots of debate over what casting # is better but for street use it really doesn't matter

Vortec didn't start till 88, fitting vortec heads on an older block requires swapping the intake as well as the heads, and sometimes shaving the deck to match heights.

82 camaro heads should fit on your 283 but you need figure out what you want out of the engine.  In 82 there was a lot of concern over emissions, so even the 305 HO engine heads had small valves and large combustion chambers (the opposite of what you typically want for good torque).  I had an 84 Camaro and the heads were the very restrictive on the engine.

CenterBolt heads started with advent off 1-piece rear mains and fuel injection around 86-87 ( 87 on the trucks possibly earlier on the cars)

Vortec technology heads started in 1986 on the 4.3L, and the 1987-1995 heads used the same Vortec Technology to create the swirl in the head.  The Vortec Motor came out in 1996 and this is the Vortec heads everyone is talking about in reference to performance.
