Morning Bounty
« on: January 28, 2012, 03:08:04 pm »
I found a decent pair of door panels of a '75 C-20 Silverado Camper Special yesterday.  I didn't have my tools or time to mess with pulling them then.

SO, I went this morning to get the door panels and got carried away.  There were just too many parts that I didn't want to see go to the smasher...

Some of the parts weren't in very good shape, like the grille and hubcaps; however, others like the window regulators were in very good shape.  The 70's hubcaps are completely smashed, but I just couldn't bear to let them be.  The 80's hubcaps are usable, but need a lot of polishing. The seat belts are in need of a cleaning, but are in pretty good shape.

The blue box is a complete pool test kit with the bromine and alkalinity tests... It was sitting in the floor of the truck, so I grabbed it too.  Now I won't need to buy another test kit for a while.

The overall view

A tighter shot of the passenger door panel

A closer image of the top of the trim on the passenger door panel

A close up photo of the lower portion of the trim on the passenger door panel

A couple of close up photos of one of the window regulators.

A close up of the PRNDL indicator, it's broke but salvageable. I also got the door handles, they didn't have any major chrome wear or pitting to speak of.

A close up of the bowtie on the broken grille.  I grabbed the grille just 'cause.

Ultimately, I was just going to get the door panels to refurbish and install on the '73 GMC...

Next week I am going to return and get the 14-bolt from the '75 and a sliding rear window from a '78 C-10 Silverado. The slider has LOF Flo-Lite glass, which leads me to believe it is an original GM accessory sliding rear window.

Better grab what you can.  These parts are going away quick due to scrap prices still up. If I had a 6 foot privacy fence in my back yard I would rescue as may as I could.  The 73-87 craze continues to get stronger just as the 67-72 have.  Prices will do nothing but go up.  I rarely see anything around me 73-76...

I know.  It's no longer like it was in the 90's when a salvage yard had pretty much any 70's and 80's parts you desired.  I haven't been, or had a need to go to a wrecking yard in years.

There were only a half dozen 70's and 80's trucks at this wrecking yard and most had been gone over pretty well.  There was a 6.2 80's 1/2 truck with its' engine still intact.

For you northern type of people: after seeing what you have to deal with on cab rust you might like to know that every one of the cab floors I saw had gleaming paint with a bit of surface rust (if any) ;).

You should ship them up to the northern states, we can trade you some good road salt for them!

In my local area the steel prices tuned a lot of people into scrappers a few years ago. Even the salvage yards crushed and sold old the old iron they had. Close to me I only know of 2 squares that are parts trucks and nothing is for sale on either of them.
Real trucks are built, not bought Build thread

Give me a long enough lever and a place to stand, and I shall move the earth or break this bolt...Whatever, just hold my beer!

I know if I was wealthy enough to retire and just go with my hobby I would locate clean 73-87 GM truck parts and haul them up north.  I fear the establishment will figure out a way to squash the hobby by enacting more laws to discourage keeping them around at least for us weekend warriors.

Yea living in the rust belt is hard on our cars and trucks.  I was happy the day last year I seen an almost rust free bed for sale that came from south Carolina for $800 the next weekend it was on my trailer and a week later on my truck and its still the nicest part on my truck.

Maybe there should be a salvage yard party in the south...

The folks in the south can arrange a date for the shindig, the northerners can bring the tools, trailers and beer... You just have to promise that you won't let the parts rust...
