CV Joint/axle HELP
« on: February 14, 2012, 11:20:34 am »
this isn't on a chevy, but since i get better answers on here than even on the vw forums i'd thought i'd ask.
i have to replace the whole cv joint the bolts FELL OUT on a vw that i bought a couple weeks ago. the problem is this pinch bolt at the top of the steering knuckle, it won't come out. trying to turn it, the nut snapped off, which ok, it's only threaded at the end so the bolt should slide out, but of course it wont'. tried pb blast, heating it, pounding it out with a sledgehammer, tried an air hammer, nothing is working.

any ideas? and yes i tried drilling it out too of course, which isn't making any progress either.

Does that bolt have splines on the end near the head to keep it from spinning when you tighten the nut? Also where is it broken off? At the head or inside the steering arm?

Give me a long enough lever and a place to stand, and I shall move the earth or break this bolt...Whatever, just hold my beer!

I second that motion, can you separate where it pinches like a battery clamp ?

That's where I was going with that. Just don't spread it too far.
If it is splined spread the pinch some and drive it out. If it is just a bolt then the ball joint probably has a groove in it and it shouldn't need to be spread hardly at all.

I'm not much of a Volkswagen guy so I really don't know what is in there.
