Best way to repaint 8" Ralley wheels
« on: February 21, 2012, 02:16:37 pm »
I need to repaint the 8" Ralley wheels on the truck I just got from my Father-In-Law and what is the best way to do this without getting spray paint on the tires?

Put painters tape around the bead on the tire, cut paper or plastic to fit, tape the paper or plastic to the painters tape that is around the bead.

Where I used to work I used to sand blast and paint the wheels of our company trucks. I used to leave the tires on the wheels when I blasted them, then masked them off before paint. They were propane delivery trucks with white wheels. I used to use rustoleum thinned with mineral spirits sprayed out of a gun. Took a long time to cure but held up surprisingly well.

Give me a long enough lever and a place to stand, and I shall move the earth or break this bolt...Whatever, just hold my beer!

i usually take a wire wheel on an angle grinder and try to get as much of the old paint and rust off, mask the tires and valve stems off  and then put 2-3 coats of automotive primer on them and then 1-2 coats of finish paint out of a rattle can on mine. i usually use rustoleum!

Prep work is key here especially with wheels, if you do not take your time the paint will not last very long.

#2: There is no such thing as impossible, it just takes longer.

Thanks. I use to have a metal band that went around the wheels and you had a clip that you could use to adjust it but I lent it to someone and never got it back and not sure who that was.  :-\ I hate browing(sp) things and sometimes this is what happens when you lone things out. I bought it at Eastwood but all they now have is paper. I guess I will just have to do it the old fasion way. Oh yes, I believe in doing prep work and doing it right. You can really mess up a good paint job if you do not. Thanks
