quadrajet numbers

can someone tell me about these numbers? i got an old quadrajet for free and ive never ran numbers. in case pic doesnt work......they are.........17085292......0596......HMJ.

1708= 80 and up
5= is the last numeral of the application year
2= federal/ non cali app which is good
9= chevy
2= automatic trans

To be honest idk. Maybe someone else will chime in. If you were gonna use this carb by it self with out a computer... id stick with a pre 76

Pre '76 carb.'s are largely divorced choke setups, which I'm not a fan of.  As long as it doesn't have a fuel mixture solenoid and tps on it, any quadrajet can be made to do what you want.  I prefer the electric choke over divorced or hot air tubes.  Metering rods, jets, and secondary spring hangers are all changed easily enough if it wasn't configured exactly how you want.  My opinions only of course.

Sorry I ment to say pre 77.  My choice is 76. Its perfect for my daily driving

As I recall, "0596" is the date code of the carb build: "059" is the 59th day of the year the carb was built, "6" is the year the carb was built, in this case, 1986.  "HMJ" is a production code.  The most important ID is the carb number, 17085292.  Using the proper Rochester reference (which is probably out of print) the carb number will reveal the full calibration, adjustment specifications, and vehicle application data.
