High pressure, High volume oil pump
« on: March 12, 2012, 07:47:09 pm »
a self in flicked problem on my 78 K30 . After setting for 20 years my 400 small block oil was like mud, after 2nd. oil change and a 1,000 mi of running the oil pressure began to drop , one day at the bank drive through a lifter  began to tick the oil  pressure was next to nothing ,because it idles a lot winching  i though i would clean the pan and install a High pressure, High volume oil pump . Everything went great ,with 5qts. of 10-w40 ,on fast idle  60psi. cold , went down the drive way ,  i got down the road about 500ft. Bang no oil pressure I shut it down ,restarted it still 0 psi. Got out and found an oil slick ,2 more new oil filters later still pores out around the filter   It broke the oil filter adapter off the block. Than i replaced the oil pump with a stock one No more  High pressure pumps for me Ps. i hope this will help someone else from making the same mistake.

I would think after 20 years and the oil being sludge that you did not get all the sludge out of the engine and some of the passages could still be plugged or partially plugged, just a guess though.

I ran a mellings 70psi pump on the 350 in my 84 z28 for a long time with no issues, but it went in during a full rebuild.

Been told by a handfull of engine builders you want a high volume pump, not a high pressure pump. High pressure is for high RPMs on  prolonged basis, like roudy round racing.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

     That does make sense.
