96 Vortec 350 in 87 tbi
« on: March 17, 2012, 02:46:24 am »
I have a 1987 2500 4X4 and I found a 96 Vortec
350 I would like to swap in. I need a Gmpp Vortec TBI intake but new they are over $350. Some people put a carb intake with a TBI adapter plate. I need some opinions on this swap. I would rather go with the gmpp but I would have to find a used one cheaper. Is there anything else I would have to do like a bigger TBI or chip tuning? Would the carb intake/adapter plate work fine?

I would stick to the injection, have you tried craigslist or ebay yet ?

Yes. That intake is hard to find used. $360 is the cheapest I've seen it. I've seen where some people use an Edelbrock carb intake and a TBI adapter plate to put the TBI on it but I don't know how well that works.

I'd suspect you'd want to get a new chip for the '87 computer, those heads flow quite a bit more. The carb intake won't have the egr or some of the other stuff.

it will have the egr unless its "off road" intake

I would use this vortec style carb intake manifold and a TBI adapter plate. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-226018/
I would get the computer chip (PROM chip) reprogrammed for your set-up. I would disable the EGR valve in the programming so you wouldn't need it any more.

Here's the adapter plate I would use with that intake manifold. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HLY-17-45/ The reason I would use this one compared to the others is the thickness. With the other ones, after you bolt it to the manifold then you bolt your throttle body on the 3 bolts for your throttle body will probably go though the plate and hit the manifold. Then you probably won't notice and you'll bend that thin adapter plate. After you do that you'll have a big vacuum leak. Trust me, I've done this before. So go for that thicker Holley adapter plate.

Also Vortec head don't have port in the middle of the cylinder heads for the EGR. The Vortec V8s gets the exhaust gas from the exhaust manifolds. Just look at these brand new GM Vortec heads and the center port is blocked off. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-12558060/?rtype=7
