instrument cluster
« on: March 31, 2012, 06:37:35 pm »
I snagged a cluster out of one of these at the junkyard today because it had a factory tach and air pressure gauge. Any chance of plugging it in and everything working, other than wiring the tach and running lines for the air? 1988 CHEVROLET D6500 C7D042

Welcome to the site from California.  Was the doner rig powered by a Cat or 8.2?  Diesel tachs of that era were generally triggered by a magnetic sensor off the flywheel ring gear, though some received their signal from the alternator stator.  The air gauge will work in anything.

Thank you. It had the cat engine in it. There is an A selection and a B selection on the back of the tach. I guess I will have to see what happens when I hook it up. I would assume wiring would be different on the film on the back, I am afraid to plug it in incase something could get shorted. I will have to do a little more reserch on the bigger trucks. Would be nice if there was a site like this one for the larger trucks with schematics

What year is it going in?  If it's 1978-up, it can be "made" to work easily.  But the connector would need to be repinned.  Is it the 4000 or 5000RPM tach?
