I don't see how your getting a different temp reading by taking the heater core out of the system. With it in there, and the heat on full blast I would be surprised to see a 5 degree cooler temp reading. Most gages are not accurate enough to see that small of a change.
I also agree that plugging it is the better way, but looping it is no different than when the heater core was hooked up. Coolant runs through the heater core all the time, wether the heat is on or not. Its the air flow direction that gives you heat or no heat in the cab.
