What would you sell your truck for?
« on: May 18, 2012, 09:22:04 pm »
This isnt a whats it worth post.

I get asked this all the time.  I have to answer;   "WAY MORE THAN IT'S WORTH"

They ask what do you mean?  I say, I like my truck a LOT.  To sell it to you would mean you payed me enough I could go pay CASH for a new truck I'd like just as good.  Which for me would cost about $35,000 minimum.  Is my truck worth $35k?  Nope!  They say I want too much for my truck.  I do.  I guarantee I do.  I can't sell my truck ever for less than it would cost to buy a brand new one I'd be as happy with.

Am I gouging?  You bet!  I can't sell my truck take the cash, and maybe put doen a 1/3 of the cost down payment.  Can't do it.

What do you guys think?  I know darn well my truck isn't worth $35k+  BUT  that's the price level a new truck would be in to make me as happy (if it could) as my "old truck" does.

Am I crazy guys?  I turned down a fella not long ago wanted to give me $18k for my truck, even with wear and tear and Original engine/trans.  I thought he wasd crazy, but I couldn't get the NEW truck I wanted for $18k.  plus it was my grandfathers truck and he helped me pick out how to restore the truck.

I'm NOT gonna regret selling this truck, I regretted all the others, not this one.

What have you guys turned down for your truck?  Why did you turn it down?  why not sell it off and get cash?

My reason is:  The cash this truck would bring would NOT buy me another truck that would make me this happy.

EDIT:  To Keep this thread from getting into trouble;  Don't put a $$ amount on your truck so much as "what would you want to get out of what you got for it"  EXAMPLE: I want a new truck that makes me as happy as this one does;  OR I want a motorcycle or ETC....

I have never been in your shoes Kenny but hope to be very soon as my 1985 C20 will look pretty some day...  That one I will never sell.  Old Yeller, the extended cab, although I like it I'd sell it for the right offer.  I see your reasoning and I doubt you would be happy in a new one versus the 78...  If a 2000-03 Chevy 2500HD with a 5 speed/diesel or 8.0L I may be interested but I don't like the looks of anything newer.

I have been offered amounts ranging from $1,500 to $7,500 plus for Yellow Snow. I still own it! To me that truck is worth $20,000 plus, people think I am a nut job when I say that!
I have turned down $10,000 for my 55 in pretty much the condition its in right now. Back in 96 when I bought it, my girl friend at the time her uncle called me up the morning I was going to look at it. He said if you let me buy that 55, I will give you my 59 Chevy wagon free and clear. I told him nope, sorry!

My truck nobody wants and I don't mind that one bit.  Now my 67 Le Mans convertible I have been offered from 1000 to 10,000 before I tore it apart.  That car will never go anywhere.  My mom and I was out flower shopping when I seen it for sale.  We stopped looked it over the guy said 1500.  I didn't have the money so we left.  The next day a rollback showed up with the car and the driver asked where I wanted the car.  My mom had bought it for me.  3 months later she had lost her fight with cancer.  After the truck is done that Pontiac is next in line to get restored with some modern touches.

Well sense I've really just started work on mine, I'd take enough to get a garage. In Washington, that's a must-have that I don't have. Right now I need to drive to my parents' house to do any work on it.

I don't have any real sentimental reasons for keeping my truck- an 87 R10. So I would let it go without remorse. But I would surely replace it with another  :) I need an older 4wd to access some property we own.

My truck also holds no sentimental value, but I have always wanted a k10 step side since I was a kid, and never got to build a step side, so when I bought this one I was determined to build it.  Now since I started and by the time I finish I will have probably $7 - $10 grand it it.
My truck will be worth that much but would I sell it for that, NO.  In my honest opinion if someone wanted to buy my truck, it would cost them enough for me to buy another one and rebuild it also, but with about half of my labor included this time.  So they would really have to love my truck.

i know you said not to put a dollar amount, but in order to be detailed as possible, i would say somewhere around 6,000 and here's why:

Is the truck worth 6K book value?  Most probably not, BUT where, how and when will i find and equivalent truck that is totally stock and rust free?   So, to me, it's not just the value of the truck, it is the time and effort it will take to find another equivalent truck.

And if i were going to buy an equivalent truck, why would i sell the one i got?

P.S.  i don't like being asked if i want to sell or being offered cash if there is no sign or other indication that i want to sell.

I turned down decent offers for my truck, only because of the time I've got into it. I don't have a lot into it money wise, but the truck is my baby and I'll get it where I want it eventually.

Cars are more expensive in Sweden than overseas, and old american cars are of course more rare here. I bought my Chevy for $2 600, and it's in my family now, I'll never sell it.

I would consider trading my '83 C10 for a 73-91 k5 in better cosmetic condition and slightly better mechanical condition, if it had the right personality. My c10 has a painless wiring harness installed the way I want it (accessible and with some custom changes), has proven to be reliable even after sitting for a length of time, fell into my hands at the right time for the right price and has treated me right as long as I've been repairing/upgrading it. Kinda hard to give something like that up.

It all depends on what mood I'm in.  My burban needs tons of TLC and honestly I don't have all that much money into it.  I would rather sell it to a family member who could properly store it until I can really dive into it, then buy it back.
