Chevy 10 bolt rearend question
« on: May 29, 2012, 07:07:30 am »
I have an 84 Chevy short box 2WD with stock 10 bolt rear with 3.40 gears i believe. I have a built 383 stroker and mainly want to make this a strip truck. I had originally planned to drop a Ford 9 in under the rear but i have decided to change plans and keep this stock 10 bolt under i get more time for this 9 in conversion. My question is what posi trac should i be looking for in scrapyard or ebay? What axle spline does this have? I assume its 8.5 ring gear. Will these posi units in new chevy trucks 87+ work? I am not going to attempt to this rebuild myself but trying to round up all the parts..I would also like to go with a 4.10 or higher gear..Any insight appreciated as this keeps getting confusing trying to find the right new or used posi unit to work on this application. I know someone out there knows what to tell me to look for!
Thanks

Strip only truck or street strip.  If you are looking for a strip only get a spool.  Of course you will find the weaknesses of everything quick like that.  A good Eaton or Auburn limited slip will work.  The later 10 bolts were 33 spline, so you need to know what you have already.  If you are not planning on running slicks the 8.5 will last.  10bolt 8.5's are pretty much swappable from 81-up short of axle splines.
