Original Location of Gas Tank
« on: June 05, 2012, 12:46:04 pm »
So I have an odd question.

I have a 74 C/K 10 Stepside 4x4 Short Bed. Now When sitting in the rig the passenger side rear fender has a gas cap and filler neck and the location of my gas tank though it does not APPEAR to be stock to me. It seems someone cut a hole in the fender and slapped a tank in there. Yet there is no tank on the driver side yet there is a fuel door in the front of the fender between cab and step. Now are these replacements off a new truck or is this actually the stock fuel tank location?

I have searched to replace the passenger fender because its pretty banged up and not repairable. yet only finding square or round fuel holes on the passenger side and if thats not the correct fender I guess Ill be cutting and sheet metaling it up to make it look right.

Any help would be apperciated.

Stock single tank on a 1974 would be on the passenger side.  The very mention of a gas door would indicate a newer bed was installed at one time.  They added gas doors and changed sides of a single gas tank truck in either 1980 or 81

Yeah i was curious if someone had replaced the fenders or the entire bed due to the issues with finding fenders that matched that truck. So I guess time to go ahead and replace both fenders. That way I dont have to screw around fixing crap.

Just swap the tank brackets front to rear on the tank, and mount it on the drivers side. Extend your lines, and get a filler tube to fit the door style fender. Then replace your pasengers side with a new fender without a filler hole.

My74 step side 4x4, came with only gas tank on passenger side, like zieg said it has no door and just a screw on cap.  I am however putting dual tanks on my truck, so I went to the local wrecking yard and pick up a set off a 77 that had dual tanks with all the hardware.
