Engine will not start
« on: June 14, 2012, 04:22:37 pm »
So my engine won't fire...here's the story.  I put a new carb on my truck and a fuel hose came loose and caused a small fire.  Well after putting the fire out a bunch of my engine wires were melted.  To remedy this I bought a used engine wiring harness from the same year as my truck, 1985.  I took out the melted engine wiring harness and put in the one I bought.  The one I bought did not appear to have been altered in any way.  Any wire that I unplugged or un-bolted I plugged back in or bolted back on with the "new" harness.  Well after this I tried to start the truck.  The starter engages and I am getting fuel, however I am not getting any spark to my plugs.  Also there is a loud ticking sound when I try to start the truck.  I am not a mechanic or engine builder so I am stumped as to what the problem is.  My truck is a 1985 GMC Sierra Classic with a 350 and 4 speed manual.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check for 12V at the distributor pink/red wire?  Did you verify that when you quickly move the throttle at the carburetor fuel squirts down into the carb.?  How did you establish that you have no spark?  Is the ticking coming from the starter possibly?  What else did you do besides the wiring harness, ie plug wires, remove distributor, etc.  Can you describe where the fire was and what was damaged?  Pics of fire damage?
