Oil???

Ok I just got a 454 that's been bored 30 over...with dart aluminum heads for 3500 bucks...never been started after build...but I'm wantin to know what's the best oil to run..ive always run penzoil but also have never had a built motor.

Begin with a good "break-in oil"...

and prime the lube system before starting the first time (use a primer tool that has a fixed collar and sliding upper support)...

After 1 - 2 oil & filter changes, switch to the oil of your choice. 

I prefer multi-vis synthetics and run Mobil 1 15w/50...

If its a flat tappet cam, you will still want to run a  zinc additive to any oil you use,even after break in.

You shouldn't need a 50 weight oil, 10W30 is fine, unless you have loose bearings and your oil pressure is low.  Some will argue 50 weight is harder on the pump and distributor gear.

Don't mean to hijack the thread here, but does  anyone know of an oil that still has ZDDP in it.

Brad Penn and Joe Gibbs make oil with high ZDDP, but its expensive. They both have websites

Comp, Edelbrock, Lucas, Royal Purple, et al, make those oils too (less expensive).  Essentially, that's all 'break-in oil' is, mineral oil with the ZDDP additives.  So, you could run break-in oil indefinitely.  Comp, Edelbrock, et al, make ZDDP additive concentrates, too.  But, adding GM Engine Oil Supplement (EOS) to your oil provides nearly the same protection (and is legal in all states).  The other lube solutions, aren't.  FYI: you can flood an oil with ZDDP, as well, so don't use ZDDP additives in addition to ZDDP enriched oils.

I prefer mobil products as well. I run 5w30 mobil one in my new engine right around 6k on it now and has great oil pressure. I change it every 4-6k depending on use and time. I broke it in on an engine dyno. Best 250 ever spent. added 20 hp as well with the tune. I also have proof of what I have and piece of mind knowing how it runs before installing it.
