Cab mounting questions?
« on: June 19, 2012, 02:41:25 pm »
I just picked up a 1973 cab the other day I and was wondering how the cab mounts go. On my 1986 cab they were way to rusted to turn off so the torch got the best of them. But how do you get the rear bolts into the cab, I can can see there is threads in the cab but is there a nut or something that goes in the cab? Also I have no clue on the front, on my 1986 it must no be right, the guy who had it before me had a beam under the old cab mount location with a bolt through them, so you could see the head in the cab. But I was looking at my 1973 and it's just all flat floor in the cab. So how do they attach in the front, I can't check under the cab right now until I move the cab.
If there was no rust when you restore a vehicle, it would be to easy.

The rear cab mounts and the front cab mounts all have a square nut with a metal retainer spot welded down over it so it cannot turn You can't see any of them, they are built into the cab.

This is a picture of one of the front ones opened up. Not shown in the picture is another piece of steel that ties the supports together but you can see the nut down in there.

You can see the plate in this picture. So there is 2 plies of metal directly over that nut, the plate and the floor.

If the nuts spin then you have to cut the floor open to access them.
Do you have issues with yours or just wondering about them?

Thanks that makes a lot more sense. I was just wondering about them because when I torched of my bolts I thought I would have to rip into the cab to mount it. But this just makes it so much simpler.

You need to use the cab mount bushings for the year frame you are using don't forget.

Yes. A kit will include all six mounts.
If you are using a 73 cab with your 86 front clip you will have to modify the hood hinge area. There is great info in the tech area for that. Also don't scrap your old cab until you are done. You can use it for reference and whatever parts that you need.

The '73 cab I got came with the fenders, hood, and core support so I'm good with that but that is exactly what I planned on doing by referencing my old cab, it makes it 100% easier by just taking stuff out and slapping it into the new cab. But I got another question, if I were to use my old wiring harness how much rigging would you have to do to make it work with the '73 lights and wipers?
