73-87 bed dimensions VS post 88
« on: June 21, 2012, 07:45:26 am »
Anyone ever try to put a post 87 topper on a pre 87 bed?  I think the later models have a tapered bed where as the earlier models have parallel bed rails but didn't turn up details on a search.  Anyone know?  I like those BAK Industries Bak-Flip bed covers but they only offer them for the 88 and newer body styles.  Wondering if there's any shot at modifying one to fit or not.

Thanks

Won't work.  The 88 on up is much more narrow and won't able to be attached to the bed unless you put a 1x6 on the bed and lay the cap on it.  I've seen it done both ways and it really isn't a good look.  My $.02

x2 on what Zieg said.  It really does not look good when the topper is smaller than the bed.

Thanks guys, that's what I needed to know.  I called BAK Industries and I managed to speak to so done who's paid to read from a cue card.  "we don't take custom orders and we don't up have one that will fit your truck.". There wasn't anyone I could talk to about which pieces might work or even give me hints.  I'll have to settle for "it ain't possible".

Wish I had a neighbor that had one so I could try to dup it...

Check your local Craigslist.  Obviously the 73-87 GM truck caps work best but if it is for a 8 foot bed the 1980-1996 Ford F-Series toppers fit fairly well.  I've had both...
