Need a new drive shaft
« on: June 24, 2012, 07:36:03 pm »
i just bought a 86 chevy k10 long bed with a 350 (though it was originally a 305). Well the tranny is bad (turbo 350) and it has a np 208 mated to it. So i also have a 80 k10 short bed with the original turbo 350 and 205 (divorced) in it so i figured i'd swap the trannys/transfer cases and keep parting out the 80. but since the 86 has a 208 it now has a drive shaft that will be about 2 to 3 in. too short with the 205 t-case. so i was wondering were the best place to get a drive shaft is since the local junk yard is almost useless.

The other option is get the tranny going till i can gather up the parts to swap to a stick shift and save me the troble of changing it now since it will be my first time and i am fairly busy. So the problem is the tranny is currently doing this: as you drive down the road it doesn't sift into 2nd till 3,000 rpm, and then when you get to about 3,000 again it sifts into third but the problem is that ether third is completely busted or it is shifting to neutral or something but all of asudden the engine revs up from no lode and i have to slow down to around 15-20 mph before the tranny will re-engage.

So as you can see i am in a bit of a pickle so any help ether way will be great.

Why don't you just swap the tranny and leave the 208 in the truck?

Because the 208 is mated and the 205 is divorced :-\

You can't install the th350 to 208 adapter on the back of your new transmission? Are they different?

Well i could but then that would one more part that i have left over when i convert it to a manual later because i want the 205 instead of the 208 so i would just have a adapter laying around.

then you will have another or two drive shafts laying around. also i dont know for sure but i thought the divorced transmission was a 2wd so it would have a different tail on it. instead of wasting money and time i would look for the manual swap now

This makes sense. It was a long day for me yesterday and I didn't think of the tail shafts.

I would try and trade or sell the th350/divorced 205 set up for a SM465/205, linkage, pedals, and drive shafts. Or just look for another th350 to get you by until you can acquire the parts to do the swap. Don't just scrap the th350 to 208 adapter though. There are not many of those around and it may be valuable.

As far as the drive shaft for the divorced 205, check with a tranny shop they might know where to have one made local to you.

Yah i guess i'll just hurry up and get the manual in it. the thing is with the bad tranny there is no adapter to the 208, it seems to just be made to mate up with it, so i am thinking that they both came together out of a newer truck

So as you can tell from the above posts i will be doing some decent modding to get the manual in anyways. So is there a good tranny similar to the MY6 (has overdrive) but a bit more available that i could use for this (i like 5-speeds too)? I would be using the 205 t-case.
