84 K10 dash steel removal?
« on: July 04, 2012, 09:24:59 pm »
Installing a tach today I started to poke around and found some stuff out of place...so I started dismantling the dash assembly and got as far as unbolting it and having it still connected at the base of the windshield. Anyone ever removed this to paint it and did a thorough cleaning behind the dash a/c box? I have some firewall insulation I'd like to install and replace crappy rigging that someone else did. Thoughts anyone? Thanks!!!

The steel dash is spot welded to the windshield frame. The bolts on the side just stiffen it up and hold it secure to the sides. It's quite a job to remove it and reinstall it. I wouldn't do it just to paint it. 20X less work to mask it off if it just needs paint. If it is damaged I would still not remove it, I would cut out the damaged section and replace it with a section from another truck.

Give me a long enough lever and a place to stand, and I shall move the earth or break this bolt...Whatever, just hold my beer!

I agree with thirsty. Its a huge headache to remove, especially without damaging the windshield channel. It is less of a pita to remove the ac box and install the sound deadener.
