How much would you pay?
« on: July 07, 2012, 06:04:03 am »
So I officially have a mental problem.  Still haven't gotten the truck in my profile done yet, but I'm thinking about picking up another project.  Need to know what you guys would offer for a 83 C10 Stepside.  My wife's uncle is thinking about unloading his.  Zero rust, it needs a little body work on one fender, interior is very clean except for around the radio and he has ALL the parts to restore it to nearly new condition already.  Great running 350 with auto, custom deluxe and new tires.  He's got too many projects and thinks he'll never get around to finishing this one.  Stepsides have always been my favorite so I need a reality check.  I don't want to insult him, but don't want to give him the kid's college money either.   ;D

Relative's... I wouldn't offer anything.  I would just tell him that you are extremely interested in his truck and to have him please give you first crack at the purchase of it when he is ready to sell.  You may be surprised "either way" on what he thinks it is worth.  That way you keep from overpaying or insulting... My $.02  If he doesn't want to tell you what he wants for it, than it is probably too much anyway...

I think Zeig's advice is good.  If you offer him too low he will be insulted.  Easy to hurt feelings when you are dealing with family and money, especially if it is something he has a sentimental attachment to.

I will throw a number 4 on what has been said.  The only other thing I would add is, check in your area or close to your area for something in similar shape and see what they want.  That way you can get an idea of what your area is supporting, also that will tell you if your wife's uncle thinks it is worth more than it should be.

Run away!

I'd say this if there is one unknown.  ask around about him and if he would be all PO'd when you got modify it or customize it to your liking.  would he make a stink about you doing mods that are distasteful to him?  I've had that problem once.  will never do it again.  or just be up front and ask him, so would it bother you if i modified it in a way you hate...

Just a thought.  I got a buick from my grandad and he gave me crap everytime he saw it cuz i put rims and dark tint and a big speaker box in the trunk...  he said it was just fine and gave me a lot of crap for the wheels since it already had new white walls on it...lol  wouldnt have gotten that car if i knew he was gonna be like that.

Thanks for the input guys.  My family has always been cool about swapping and trading, etc...no fuss, just haven't dealt with her side of the family before.  I'll play dumb on the price and make him give me a figure.  Any mod's I would do would be ok with him, he's got a beautiful '51 ford he put a bunch of custom touches to and had a few plans for this one.  He has unloaded a bunch of stuff (bikes, boats, jet ski's) to his side of the family and his only complaints have been when they turned around and sold the stuff off for a profit within a month or two.  I'll think about it hard before I jump into it.  It'll be spring before I could get out there again anyway.
