Bore out engine?

How much am i looking at to bore my 454 price wise. what all would i have to upgrade in order for it to be worth my money. i was looking to bore it out .030. would it even be worth my time how much power would i gain.

 First you should see if it needs boring. Boring it for performance reasons would also have to include a lot of other factors, boring alone will not yield much in performance gains.

 You can can find many books out there on big block Chevy engines which will teach you about performance building. They can pretty interesting if you really want to learn something.

Bore it over,maybe a port and polish,Heathy cam,Intake and carb to match,maybe some roller rockers,Higher comp. pistons (not so you need race gas but 91 oct.) when i bored my motor sbc 350 .030 over (355) it costed me $250 and the second motor i bored .030 over sbc 350 (355) costed me $340.Same pace,Just the first time the weren't busy with race season and the second time they where packed...That's the only reason i could think of,unless there rates wet up but oh well...they did bore,clean,cam bearings,frost plugs

If you have a really restrictive intake manifold with restrictive heads and restrictive exhaust, then you could bore it 0.060" and still not see much performance gain (if any). 

Boring is usually for bringing bringing a cylinder bore back into a correct "cylindrical" shape , not necessarily for increased cubic inches.  You won't know exactly how much bore it will need until the engine is apart and checked. Excessive blow-by into the combustion chamber can be a sign of worn rings and cylinder bore.  A compression check can help show whether your keeping proper compression within the cylinders and whether all cylinders are fairly consistent in compression.

If the cylinder is worn to point of needing a re-bore, then a fresh bore/hone and new rings could gain you quite a bit of power. However, if you're to the point of needing a rebore and rings, it's very possible you'll need other internal engine parts (e.g. crank & rod bearings, cam bearings, timing chain, camshaft, etc) not to mention valves, guides and seals in the cylinder heads.

Even if the other internal parts are still serviceable; in the interest of time and labor, it may be better to just replace the parts while everything is apart.

I agree with Jason s if it is indeed to the point that it needs bored, you might as well give it a full rebuild, if price is a factor, master rebuild kits run around 300 dollars some even include a new cam and all come with the oversize piston and rings which you would need anyway. And when I recently had an engine bored it only cost me 8 bucks a cylinder and they installed the cam bearings for me.

youll gain about 40 hp but to get a good professianal job done its goin to cast about 450-600 bucks.

but you run the risk of running it hot if your not carefull..
