Steering rebuild questions
« on: June 24, 2005, 09:00:00 pm »
I'd like to rebuild the whole steering system, brakes and suspension in my 86 C-10 4x4 since these components are pretty worn.

I figure now is a pretty good time to do it since I wanna lift the truck 6" too with 35" tires.  I guess the tie rods, drag link, etc. are all pretty self explanitory, but does anybody have experience with this job or any tips or considerations for me?  I am aware I will need to extend the brake lines and add a new dropped steering arm too.

I am also considering a high power aftermarket power steering pump and steering box.  Does anybody have these items?  Are they a waste of money?

My steering is sloppy, so I am just assuming that the box needs replaced.

Any thoughts on this are welcome.

Checkout coloradok5.com They are all about the 73-91 4x4 blazers and you will probably be able to find a lot of info on this topic over there. Good luck. Nice truck by the way.

there should be a "set screw" to tighten up your steering box. of course you know that once you replace steering parts you will need an alignment. eyeballing isnt good enough. you dont want to buy new tires and have em wearing out early. you might also want to check out the ball joints since itll be ripped apart. and u joints. and dont forget the sway bar bushings. personally, i wouldnt use the brake line extenders, i would get longer brake hoses. but thats just me. if you check the for sale section you will see i have a set NIB skyjacker hoses here if you would like to make an offer in the fs secrion. back to topic, if you are going to do it, you might as well do it all. rarely anyone ever greases the grease fittings so it would be a good time to get it all apart and replaced. ive never used the high pressuse stuff so i have no opinion on that there.

Thanks guys.

Duke-
It will be a while before I can afford to lift it, maybe 2 or 3 months away, so I will contact you then to see if you still have the hoses.   My loss if you sell em I suppose...

your ahead of me on my timeframe then. hehe.  seriously though, make sure you dont cut any corners on the front end. anything that moves i would consider replacing. most people dont maintain the stuff as it is meant to be. especially with all the sealed components nowdays.
