1985 K10 Rear end
« on: September 20, 2012, 06:56:37 pm »
I have a 1985 K10.  Im replaceing the outer seal.  My question is should i have any gear oil in the tubes when the axles are removed. It is not level  One sid is a lillte lower then the other. I took the cover off and empty all the oil.  And then when i took the axle out oil came running out.  Is that normal or is there a inner seal that needs to be replaced also.  Thanks for any help

Yes that is normal.  The oil is what lubricates the outer axle bearings behind the axle seals.  Welcome to the site.

they are pressed in. A chissle, and hammer work well. try to get under the flange and lift it up out. Then replace with like original. Or tap it NPT, and put a nipple in there.

Thanks I just drilled and taped the hole.  Also does it matter which side you put you brake calipers on. Are they left and right fit.  The reason i ask is i had the dust shields off to paint and didn't notice but are they left and right also.  This is on a 4x4.  Just trying to find out if I need to take it back apart and fix it.  THanks for any help.

Yes, two different calipers.

Once you start to put them on it will be obvious to you what side goes where. You can't physically swap them from side to side. The dust shields get installed with the caliper mount towards the back. The calipers can only go on one way because of the hydraulic line.  ;)

Hope that helped. You can't screw it up as far as what goes where.

I had the dust shields off also and i think i may have got them on wrong as far as left side and right side.  Cause now that it put the calipers on the hydroulic line is on the bottom and I thinks it should have been on the top.  So i guess my main question is is the dust sheilds left and right sided?

The bleeder should always be on top that should indicate left and right. Air goes up, so if the bleeder is on the bottom you will alwasy get fluid when bleeding, and the air will be trapped in the top side.
