Manual sm465 to Auto 700r4
« on: October 03, 2012, 03:29:52 pm »
Looking at making a swap in my 73' K20,its used just to cruise around in, wanting to get rid of my manual and go with an automatic,,curious if anyone on this site has made the switch, and if so,what problems would one might run into, i currently have the np205 transfer case,i was curious about the adapter between the auto trans and the transfer case, would i be needing a different one?or weather the auto trans(700r4) is longer/shorter than the sm465,,if so,will there need to be any driveshaft mods if there is problem between different transmission case lengths, any advise on this project would help out great,,thanks again everybody.

Going from memory (which could be risky ;) ) is that Advance Adapters & maybe others offer an output shaft kit to couple the 700r4 to the 10 spine transfer case from a sm465. The total transmission/mount bracket will be slightly longer when going to the 700...about 1 3/4".
As far as driveshaft mods, it would depend on what you have now (raised suspension, ect.) that has effected the original slip yoke areas if anything & also how you go about it. Personally, I would try to move the transfer case back maybe 3/4"-1" & move the engine ahead the rest. Moving the engine/trans ahead on the surface may seem odd & will effect some things a bit (headpipe length, ect.) but will likely be better (& cost effective) in the long run...transfer case shifter close to original hole, driveshaft length hardly changes, ect. Just my thoughts, Lorne
