Fuel cell?
« on: October 10, 2012, 11:26:33 pm »
Ok. So I've been working on my 82 Sierra and today dropped the gas tank and replaced the fuel sending unit. Got everything put back together and got to wondering something. The truck originally came with dual tanks but the p.o apparantly put a different bed on at some point and did away with the passenger side tank, why I don't know but the selector switch was still mounted to the frame and I could see where the old tank was mounted. But the bed has only the driver side fuel door. That leaves me with one 16 gallon tank and with a four wheel drive powered by a 350 I ain't gonna go far between fill ups. How do fuel cells work? If I were to mount an extra tank in the bed would it work by gravity feed?  I know I could put a tank where the spare tire goes but I'd guess a spare in the bed would be cheaper and easier. What would I need to do to get it hooked up and working and is it really feasible? I wouldn't really be concerned with being able to tell how full it is, mainly just use it for a spare on longer trips than just around town.

Probably easier if you just got another saddle tank and plumbed it back in.  Regardless of what you use, the switch will have to be used (or a switch) to get the tank to work.

Do they make another side tank that's larger than the 16 gallon that I've got now?  It seems odd to me that they'd make a shortbed truck with only one small tank. Only problem with adding another tank to the passenger side is that I'd have to either get another bed or run the filler tube up to the bottom of the bed and cut a hole in the floor to mount it to and it would be a pain to have to lean all the way over the top of the bed to fill it up through the floor

They make a 16 gallon tank for the SWB and LWB trucks, they also have a 20 gallon tank for LWB trucks ONLY.
If you find a donor you could cut the door out of the side and use it like factory.
When these trucks were being made, you didn't drive them that far...

Well, that and you could probably afford to fill em up more often! Lol
