« on: November 02, 2012, 04:14:57 am »
I have a 1986 c10 with a 305. I love the way it runs but I'm looking for a little more get up and go power. Just wondering what kind of modifications can be made in California..I can't seem to find much browsing the web. Thanks guys

Begin by settling on your primary use of the vehicle and, realistically, what you wish to attain.  Most modifications affect fuel mileage.  Remember, the parts work together - match them for the greatest benefit.  Research your year model at the listed (and similar) sites for parts that claim CARB Executive Order (EO) exemption numbers.  Be sure to read all the details about the exemptions as most are very specific.  Visit the manufacturers' websites for additional details.  You can also visit the CARB website for EO details.  Be patient, it takes time...

California ARB  http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/devices/amquery.php

Here are some of the more common modifications you can research:
* performance chip (based on the extent of the mods you're planning)
* headers (shortys or full length)
* distributor
* carburetor
* trans shift kit (if an automatic)
* intake manifold
* 1.6 aluminum roller rockers
* camshaft and double roller chain
* cylinder heads

But, keep in mind a 305 is limited.  Careful planning will improve your cost-to-benefit ratio.  Digging deeper into the engine with pistons, crank, etc may yield disappointing results for the cost, unless the engine is due for an overhaul, anyway.

Alright thanks, I've done a little research on CARB but not enough to really know what I can and can't do. It looks like I may be due for a new carburetor anyways so that would probably be my first step. After that I really need some new paint then I get to make plans on what to do.

     As BD stated, figure out what you want the end result to be.  Once you have a clear plan, visit your local speed shop, they are everywhere in CA.  Tell them what you want to achieve, whether it is speed, or fuel economy, I have found with several vehicles they are willing to help.
     Once you decide what to do, please take BD's advice seriously and check on the CARB website if the product you want is not clearly marked "CARB" certified for CA.  on the package.  I have gotten burned a couple of times by false "CA Approved stickers on boxes".  Now I check on the web site.
Good luck with your journey.
