81 Chevy Scottsdale K10 work in process
« on: November 04, 2012, 08:33:07 pm »
Bought this old truck from a farmer who had it from new. Apparently he had trouble gauging his passenger side of the truck when turning ect as it was pretty beat up from hitting and rubbing up on things. When I first go the truck I really didn't have much interest in restoring it or redoing it. I put a Rough Country 4 inch lift on it and Crager 15x8 Street lock wheels first with some BFG All Terrain TA's then upgraded with some Mickey Thompson 33x12.5 Baja claw radials.
After using it as a daily driver for about a year I fell in love with the old girl. I don't have pictures of the process of lifting the truck but have started to collect some pictures of the process after following some builds on here. I will post what I have and update as I progress along.

After the the 4 inch Rough Country lift and with the old 31x10.50 BFG All terrain TA's. The tires looked ok before the lift but after it was pretty evident that I needed something bigger to fill the wheel wells.

New steering wheel new dash from  . I needed a new transmission my old one was slipping bad so I got a  rebuilt turbo 350 with a bit of a shift kit. I also got a rebuilt rear end with a limited slip posi (hate the posi) 3:73 gearing. I also got a new front diff completely rebuilt including all the steering components. Sorry no pictures of the install as I said above I wasn't much into documenting things then.

Just rebuilt the NP208 transfer case, It was leaking from the front output shaft quite bad so I thought I may as well go through the whole transfer case. After getting into it I realized that it had been rebuilt not to long ago but the chain was a little sloppy so now I KNOW its fresh and with a new chain I should be good to go for a few more miles. I had never opened a transfer case before so it was a slow process and a bit of a learning curve but no pieces left afterwords  :)

Some pics of the process

I am currently building a 350 out of a 98 truck for it but don't quite have the funds to finish it the way I want to. (but just ordered my aluminum heads!) So I thought I may as well get the engine "patched up" to the point I can reliably drive it again. As I have done almost the complete drive line except the engine I knew it was a matter of time. The old Q-Jet was completly warn out and the valve covers were leaking like crazy. I also had allot of small vacuum leaks from the emissions equipment that was half there, half hooked up and half not, nothing to serious wrong mechanically with things just needed some TLC.

I found a used Edelbrock performer intake with a 650cfm performer carb w-electric choke, $100 for the pair. The guy that wanted to get rid of them didn't like how they looked on his truck "cuz they were dirty" hmmm was he lying? I thought why not, lets roll the dice, visibly they looked ok. He had them all wrapped up and in the original boxes, I thought that is a good sign that he takes care of things at least. I might end up having to rebuild the carb but compared to the Q-jet that was on there it should be pretty easy to be an improvement regardless. the old Q-Jet's pivoting pins for the butterflies were so warn they would open maybe 10% of the time.

parts were coming off... if the guy that sold me the intake and carb only knew what dirty was...
After about a half day of cleaning and scraping due to whoever last did intake and valve covers going ape sh*t with silicone I was ready to put some paint on things and start putting pieces on again.

this brings be up to today. At this point I'm not quite ready to fire it up, I still have the new fuel line to run and get some new wires, but getting close. looks a little better. Hopefully oil tight and no more vacuum leaks. Can't wait to get her back on the road everyday.
