I just replaced the passenger side on my 87, last week. It was in bad shape. It was that way when I bought the truck. I would like to know the answer to you question also.

Are they pot metal like factory or the plastic replacements?

On the top lip near the hood, it looks sorta like stretch marks and it's starting to peel a little bit, and right below the headlight it has started to bubble and peel, but my driver side hasn't started doing that yet. yea, i think they are plastic.

I bought some cheap plastic replacements for my beater truck and what I did was painted them. Bought them new....scuffed them and painted them silver and put about 5 coats of clear. Had them for about 2.5 years now and they still look new (as long as my truck is clean...which isn't often).

If the chrome is delaminating and separating from the plastic substrate, it's a material compatibility/preparation/plating issue with the manufacturer.

Sorry took me soo long to post the pictures of mine, since you did ask for them. However mine is from a 86 chevy which did not have chrome bezels, from seeing other posts thinking yours are the 70s style. Anyways this is what I on my beater since it had no grille or front bumper when I got it, got the parts from a junkyard and cleaned them up, I was suprised at how nice the bumper was, and only paid $20 for bumper and $10 for grille and bezels. Got to love pull your own junkyards!!!

Painted grille gunmetal grey and headlight bezels (cannot really see it but put black honeycomb on back of stock grille, to help protect my pretty radiator.

Close up of headlight bezel (my truck was hit in the front before I bought it and that is why bezel does not look like it fits, other side is better but do not have a pic of that side and the brown under headlight is just dirt do not really clean it much cause when i spray water at it more metal falls off....lol):

How it looks on truck:
