Help please Back up light switch
« on: November 12, 2012, 04:35:47 pm »
Hi,

I have a1980 custom deluxe with 3 speed manual transmission and L6 engine. I need to know where the back up light switch
Is because i miss it on my truck. The ex owner may uninstall it. I have searched the internet but there are various
Types. Some say its in the gearbox and some on the steering column. It will be great if you have a picture or even
the part number for the 3 speed manual.  I hope you help me. Thank you ver much.

Based on the picture in my catalog it looks like it mounts to the steering column.

Hope this helps

I just realized, I've become one of those Ol' Geezers I didn't need to listen to when I was young.
Use what you can and leave the rest as your mileage may vary.

Thank you but there is a difference between manuel 3 speed , mAnuel 4 speed and a/t . I think the 3 speed is in the transmission and not at the sttering column

I don't have a picture but, according to my Repair Manual the backup light switch for a three speed trans is mounted on the steering column.

I'm not sure but try looking under the hood where the shift levers are on the column.

There is an adjustment when you mount it on the column so it is only on when in reverse. I'll see if my repair manual has a wiring diagram for a 3 speed BU sw for you. Power would normally come from the switched side of the fuse panel but I don't know what colors the wires would be.

Edit to add: wire colors are Dark Blue coming from the fuse block and Light Green to the lights.

Hope this helps.

I see you are in Turkey. Is the truck there also?
I am assuming this is a column shift and not a floor shifter.
If zieg's switch doesn't work, there is a site that claims to carry them (they are not cheap)

Have you considered simply adding a manual switch like a toggle or rocker. (it would probably be cheaper than the original) Then use it to turn your BU lights on and off. I would suggest a lighted one so you are reminded when you have them on. That way you won't blind traffic behind you as you go down the road.

Edit for spelling
