removing rear driveshaft/yoke from carrier bearing

Hey guys,

I have my driveshafts out of my '73, and am now trying to remove the rear yoke from the carrier bearing.  It looks like it should just slide out, but it only goes a couple inches, then hangs.  Tried a little friendly persuasion with a rawhide mallet, to no avail.  Is there a trick to this, or do I just need a larger hammer?

there is no trick... i think maybe some wd 40 and some persuasion might do the trick... has to, because its supposed to slide in and then it just tightens up with the nut... there is no science in it...  you are talking about the pinion yoke right...

No, not the pinion yoke - this would be at the other end.  Here's a couple of pictures...

oh gotcha... didn´t think about the carrier bearing, since my chevy doesn´t have one. and i dont have experience with them so we´ll see if someone else will chime on this...

You have to losen the nut on the end of the female side of the slip joint. Once that is off it will slide right off.

I would call it a nut! I am not sure what its real name is, but it threads on.

 Yeah, once I got it cleaned up enough to actually see the threads, it was sorta obvious.
