1982 c10 stepside autocross?
« on: November 20, 2012, 06:05:01 pm »
I'm planning on building my stepside 82 c10 to autocross with just for something different mostly. I have flipped the rear axle and cut the front springs and planning on using 1 ton sway bars front and back. What other suspension mods could I do to help me out I'm gonna build this through the winter and run it in the autocross club at my school. I might also once in a while run this truck at the track too but most time just autocross. I wanna keep it static drop. I am running a fuel injected 350 mild build on it and trans has a full manual valve body. I am planning on running some Hoosier on it for tires. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a co-worker who autocross's a 70 Camaro.  I can't imagine our trucks corner worth a darn without stiffening the frame and heavy sway bars, and yes sticky tires are a must.  He runs a 4 speed and has a ball.  He use to run a powerglide and actually did better but it wasn't as fun.  Sounds like a worthwhile project.

Actually this is my plans for my 81 stepper:). I've already done 3"ds and flip with beltech antiroll bars, in the future I would have done new control arms with new bushings, but I did press new ball joints in upper and lower while I was at it.

SchneidR have you started yours if so any tips I have already flipped my rear end and cut the stock coils im gonna get a set of drop spindles too and get it a little lower. I picked up some sway bars from a one ton truck and gonna bolt up in the front not sure what im gonna do bout the rear yet tho.

Im gonna run 15" rims probably 8-10" wide not sure yet with some ashplat race tires should be pretty sticky for what im gonna do if not i can always get some deals on tires. ill got a pic of what i got done so far.

Nice, mines a 3/5,  I don't like to cut up stock coils though, others say different, but that's jut me.  Can't go lower in the rear without cutting frame, but why would you want to do that.  I'll probably go back to my stock 15"s but I hear different widths, wider in the rear is not the way to go as it will be harder to turn.
Right now I have 20"s love the look though

That's a dang good looking truck i got rid of the stock bump stops I'm gonna run some progressive bump stops and maybe notch the frame some still not sure yet i gotta swap in my engine and trans yet and run my wiring.  i rebuilt the rear end with a LSD and 4.10 gears so it should scoot pretty good. I'm trying to find out more info on running tires and what not I'm gonna stick with 15" rims proably 8-10" wide. i found some Bart racing wheels ill proably run with it and looking at some Hoosier tires so who knows how that will work out for me i got some nice curves they just asphalted by me so i will have to test it out on those first to see.

SchneidR, I am not sure what a my7 TRANS is ?  Did you perhaps mean an my6 which is a 4 speed with overdrive ?

Nope my7, it was a heavy duty trans built for 1 ton trucks I believe, a very stout trans. But yeah it's a 4 with overdrive.  I've had a couple of guys on the forum and at the shops that have told me this.

Don't forget a good set of shocks. You will have to research and decide which ones will work within your budget, but adjustable Konis work nice.

If you really want handling I would go with a 4 link setup in the back with coilovers and a sway bar. I would get rid on the stock springs and put coilovers in there also with a swaybar. Also if your looking at better turning the stock steering could be upgraded to b e more responsive and I would differently get rid of the the rag joint on the intermediate steering shaft those do not take much abuse. Thats just my opinion.
