Custom Guages
« on: December 03, 2012, 05:24:14 am »
I have been a member for a few months now. My wife bought me an 85 Chevy C10, it needs a whole lot of work. As I was putting my list of needs vs wants together. I felt a want to do something very different with the guages. I've seen and read the threads about doing the autometer guages and dakota digitals, neither of which wowed me. I found this site from auto meter http://www.ampcustomshop.com/custom-kit/start where you can literally customize everything for your guages. I do have a few questions as I am currently in Afghanistan and don't have access to the truck. What sizes are the guages, big and small? I assume everything is mechanical, it being an 85 and all. Is this true? Has anyone used the custom autometer guages before? Would the install be the same as the previous autometer install threads? I was a civilian mechanic before I joined the army, so I am not a first timer at most of this stuff. I just dont have the tools I'll think I'll need to tackle this over a weekend. I assume I'll need a dremel or something similiar due to making the gauges fit. Also, with the customization, it gives you the option of either flat glass or a bubble top. What are your opinions on this. This isn't my first go around at customizing a vehicle, as I had a 2005 Ram Hemi that was fully customized and blacked out, but the ex got that in the divorce. Small price to pay to see my daughter more often then she was going to allow if I kept the truck. Thanks, love the sight. Been browsing it every chance I get!

The owner of this site, Chris kapt. koas, sells several different types and styles of gauges for our trucks.  You can check them out in the store, button on top next to home button.  He is very good about answering questions also.

Yeah, I saw that the only thing that is really there are those dakota digital/analog ones. I'm not big on the carbon fiber or digital look. IMHO carbon fiber is more for the tuner crowd. Thanks though.

From what I know, because factory gauges are not inclosed there really do not have a normal size but if your going customI have found that 2" or 2 1/16" fit in the four small holes and 3 3/8" fit in the two big holes. That is if you want to have them to fit more in the holes (like I did here:  http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php/topic,24709.msg206096.html#msg206096)
However you can get two 5" if you what but they would have to be install on the front of the factory bezel so the autometer gauage bezel will be protuding out from the factory bezel. It all dpends on how you are cutting and mounting the gauges dpends on the size. My new build I have all 2 1/16" and two 5" and I am custom mounting them so they will still be sunk in and look a little factory still cause I am using the factory bezel.

-In an 85 all the gauges are electric except the speedo that uses a mechinical cable, at least my 86 was the all electric except speedo.

-Yes the custom gauges install the same they just have custom colors so they stand out from others.

-And as for the dome or flat, depends on what angle you mount them and if there will be alot of sun light in the truck or tint will help block some as the it dpends on the reflection. I usually stick with flat glass becuase it looks more like the original, just my $.02

And just remember that customizing requires either alot of trials and templetes...or alot of extra parts so you can cut them up in different ways. My first bezel I cut up to do the guages I cut them bigger and made a gauge mounting plate under it....but to me look like crap, so then I vut small holes and mount them on top of factory bezel but didnt like that either, so then cut a little bigger so then would fit down in the factory cups and be flush with the bezel. So just have patiance and find out what you like, my $.02.

We sell Silver faced gauges also.

As far as Autometer, you have to use the 5" large gauge and either 2-1/6 or 2-1/8".  I have posted the write-up on how to do it several times.

I also saw those. I'm more into the all black with either red or green accents to it. I've wanted a vehicle like that since I was a kid. The silver faced gauges would be my choice if I was going blue and white/silver. I did see the write ups, I was just making sure that the "custom autometer" gauges would install the same as your write ups. Thanks for the help.
