84 ck half ton steering column
« on: December 08, 2012, 11:24:40 pm »
Hello I have a 84 ck 1\2 ton that I picked up to put my plow on but the steering column is all torn apart and rigged up so I have a same year parts truck I was going to pull the column out of and use on my plow truck. I need to know if it is possible to use a steering column off the parts truck that's a automatic on my manual plow truck and what would be affected through the wiring harness? If only the backup lights might have a issue than that's not a big deal because they are not working now anyway and I was going to just install a toggle switch for them.

Thanks.

If it is the same year truck and the only difference is manual vs. auto column then it should swap over directly. You would just have the column shift collar and no key release button. The backup light switch on the manual transmission truck is on the transmission, so if the backup lights work now, they should work with the new column. All the other wiring should plug in the same, except the neutral safety switch on the auto column will not be connected (i.e., there won't be a connector in the manual trucks harness). Someone will chime in if I missed something.

Thanks for the response. I will take the one off my parts truck tomorrow and give it a go.
