700r4 shifting and TV set up
« on: February 09, 2013, 03:23:21 pm »
We had to pull the old quadrajet off my 82's 305 and I did'nt think anything about a TV cable. We put it back on and off I went. The truck shifts thru all the gears, however under light load it feels like it is holding 1st gear too long. I hooked up a tach and went for a ride in the neighborhood. It wants to shift out of 1st at about 18 mph or 2400 rpm. I took it out on the road and gave it a little heavier throttle and it did the same thing but a smoother shift but it did'nt go into OD until 65mph. I'm thinking I need to get it to a pro. I've heard about burning up the transmission and the fluid still looks and smells new. I'm wondering if i'm over reacting to what I've been reading about the adjustments and burning up the trans. I also need to find out the rear gear ratio in the thing, that may tell me a lot right there.

I'd reset the tv cable and see what happens. I had the same thing happen when I changed my carb. It's not hard to do. Im sure there is a post on here about doing it. As for the ratio just pop off the diff cover and start counting the ring and pinion teeth. Then divide the ring gear number by the pinion number and that will tell you.

Did you do a search on " tv cable adjustment " here ?  Here is one thread when Vile said to adjust the cable after the initial adjustment one click at a time.
