87 Chevy 5.3 Swap

Hey guys.  I just picked up an 87 Chevy 4x4 pickup with a 01 5.3 vortec swap.  Right now the engine is mated to a Th400.  Is there any way to swap a 4L60E or 4L80E in without any major mods?  The trans wiring harness for the 4L60E is there.  I dont believe they made them with a floor shift for the 4x4??

     First off welcome to the site, have you tried the search function.  There are several members on here that have done that swap.  Some are really detailed with pics.

There doesnt seem to be any real good hits for the 5.3 4x4 swaps.  Im mostly looking to see how much trouble itd be to put on an overdrive trans.  Or maybe change the gears in the truck to lower ones.

If the wiring is there for the trans you are one step in the right direction.  The 700R4 trans is the same as a 4L60E short of wiring so getting a 60 in one is very doable.  You will have to get a matching transfercase that will bolt to the 4L60 though as the one behind the TH 400 is splined differently.   And you are limited to the pre 91 transfer cases to get the drop right.
