Questions for the experts (Which I am not)
« on: April 26, 2013, 07:47:51 pm »
I have looked on the boards and have not been able to find the answer to these questions.

I recently bought a 77 K10 with a 400sb and TH350 and It has some kind of a lift on it and I am not sure how much.  It has newer springs on the front and 2 inch blocks in the rear.  the truck sits pretty level so is it safe to assume that it has a 2inch lift on it?  Or does it have a 3inch in the front and a 2 inch in the back.  I want to take it back to stock and I am not sure what kind of springs I need to get for the front and if I can just take out the block in the rear?  Did it originally come with some kind of plate between the rear springs and axel or did the springs just sit on the axel?

Also the Drive Shaft is showing about an inch to an inch and a half of the splines at the rear of the transfer case plus it has evidence of blowing u joints before, and the front drive shaft was removed to "save on gas" but I can tell that it would not line up with the current suspension setup.

I am also not positive if it has a body lift on it or not.  the body mounts are bright yellow so they are definitely aftermarket but they dont seem that big?  how thick were the original ones?

Like I said I would like it to sit at stock height and I am not sure if I need to buy only front springs and remove the rear blocks. Or if i need new springs and body mounts. as usual budget is important and I want to do this as cheap as possible.....

thanks for the help.

its hard to say with out more info like tire size and measurements from ground to the top of the wheel arch. they could of got 4" lift and wanted more so they put 2 more in the rear idk. but on a 6" lift the stock drive shafts will fit, but its the most you want to go. the front you can normally see about an inch of splines with 6" lift. or they could. but it almost sounds like they just put on 2" lift and went the cheap way and just bought blocks for the rear and new springs for the front. also they could of flipped the rear shackles added 2" blocks and bought 6" springs for the front. again need more info

(1) Removing the front shaft doesn't save any fuel.
(2) As allready stated the front shaft in stock form will bolt up with a 6" lift. It is not recommended but will work to turn the front end.
If yours does not bolt up there is more than 6" of lift.
(3) If in fact it only has 2" of lift in my opinion it would be a waste of time, and money to return it to stock. With a 2" lift you could run 265/75 tire size and it would look stock. 2" lift it isn't going to effect your ride quality either.

As far as body lifts go most common are 2" and 3". If you have 2" or 3" blocks / spacers on top of the stock, or stock replacement body mount bushings you have a body lift. If not you don't have a body lift.
Other ways to tell if it has a body lift is the bottom of the fan shroud cut out to clear the fan? Has the steering column been extended? Is the front bumper below the filler panel that goes under the grill? Are there lift blocks between the bed, and frame? Is there a 2" or 3" space between the bed floor and the frame over the rear end?

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back on here but it has been a hectic week.

The truck has 31x10.50s on it and the distance from the top of the tire to the top of the wheel well in the front is 11 inches distance in the rear for the same measurement is 9 inches.  The distance from the ground to the bottom of the front bumper is 25 inches.  there are no body bushings between the top of the frame and the bed so I assume that means there is no body lift?  The distance between the bushing right under the passenger door and the frame is 1.5 inches which might help answer the body lift question.  I guess they could just be new body bushings?  I think the rear springs are original based solely on the bushings, since they are worn pretty badly. I hope with the above info, someone might know what I am dealing with because I cannot post any pics since they are to big and I dont know how to resize them.

That did it.....looks like I'm going to have to continue this on my PC.

I'll see if I can get the pics up in the next few days.  Hopefully that helps narrow this down.

if you have 2inch blocks in the rear, then you have a 2inch lift kit. probably helper springs in the front.
