Tilt column problem
« on: May 01, 2013, 12:20:26 pm »
Found a good tight tilt column for my 82 Sierra out of a junk truck. I went ahead and put a new ignition switch on it while I had it out and installed it and wired it all up. When I turn the key the gauges actuate like they should so I know it's getting power but will not try to fire the engine. I would think the ignition switch would be good since its brand new but what I'm thinking is the neutral/safety switch may be bad. I don't have another one to replace it with and before I go throwing money at it I was wondering if there is a way to test it. The only difference between my column and the tilt column I got is the tilt has cruise control on it so there's an extra wire I don't need. Could that possibly be my problem?

you can jump the plug in to see if that is it on the neutral safety.  The switch could be out of adjustment as well

When you say jump the plug are you talking about just hooking up the two purple wires for the neutral side together? The ignition switch did have some slide adjustment on the column but when I mounted it I slid it up far where it felt like the plunger was making good contact inside.

Yes the easy way to jump it would be to take another piece of wire and put it on one end of the switch to the other....then the truck will always think it is in neutral. Then if it works you will know it is bad or needs adjusting.
