Rims from our era?
« on: June 04, 2013, 03:33:21 am »
What kind of rims did the trucks from our era have in their time?

I have decided to go with 16", 8-lug rims for my truck. That size seems to be the best choice. I know only of the "regular" style of rims (my 16.5 Thread has pics), but were there any other styles back in the 70s/80s?

I'm not yet sure what to get (steel, aluminum, chrome). I'd like my truck not to look too gaudy and to have something put on it that suits its era (no modern 90s/00s rims).  I have seen a rim on a lot of trucks that might work.. I think the 1984 movie "Red Dawn" had them (BTW, can anyone ID those?).

Beside the factory painted steel wheel and hubcap combo...

Here are links for two styles that come to mind...

Aluminum slots were fairly popular:

as were the turbo style wheels:

Back then in 8 lug rims we didn't have much of a choice.  Most were wagon wheel, some were the hurricane style and then you had the slots.  Me, I opted for the super singles on back with hubcaps, but those were 16.5's x 12

Anybody know what style of rims these are:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_I4WgBfETc

Should I go steel, chrome or aluminum?  My dad's truck is a 94 GMC with original aluminum wheels and they seem to match his truck well.  I'd like the trim, bumpers and wheels to all age well together.

What about craigers? Not stock but very much of the era and still look nice.

Those are chrome wagon wheels.
