1977 GMC Sierra Grande K15 4x4 350 Automatic
« on: July 17, 2013, 03:38:03 am »
There he is Bone Breaker my 1977 GMC Sierra Grande K15. Paid $600 for him. My 1st vehicle Im just 16. Always liked 3rd gens so I figured I'd make myself at home here. Plannin on takin the bed of and griding the rust off the frame and paintin it black first of all. Need a new bed and I sure as heck aint puttin a step side on it. Fleetside is where its at. Engine and tranny wise I wanna build a 400 Small Block try to get decent torque out of it and get about 25MPG hopefully. I want a 3 speed with Overdrive tranny. Just want it to be a honest daily driver that I can use for work purposes as well. If you have any suggestions let me know. Its just a ol redneck truck dont need nothin to fancy just want it to be reliable and look decent. Gonna repaint it red.

First, welcome from Alaska.

Second, nice ride.  Looks like it's already been lifted.

Tell us more about the truck's options (or features, powertrain, etc.) so we can better help advise you on your goals.

I haven't seen a sbc 400 in years.  It may be easier to build a 383 stroker from a 350 than source a 400 and build it.  Ther are many sources for stroker kits if you decide to go that way.

For an overdrive trans you'll likely want a 700R4 trans although IIRC, the later models are better.

Your bed doesn't look too bad in the photo so you may not need to replace it.  Various bed parts can be purchased through the store on this site.  Here's a link:  http://store.73-87chevytrucks.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?

Hopefully, this will give you something to start thinking about.  Others will be along soon.

It had a bed liner in it when I bought it and it took the inside of it up.

You aren't going to achieve 25mpg in one of these.
