engine ID
« on: July 20, 2013, 05:24:27 pm »
i have the code from the plate behind the alternator, but when i go to look it up i must be looking at the wrong section, even know i thought i looked at all of them.  i see a 69' model and that sure isn't right.  i also have the following codes i pulled so far off the truck, below.  can anyone help me id my setup from these codes or point in the direction of pulling more, without disassembling items.

i located the following code behind the alternator:
1M0612
5VP

i also have the intake manifold code:
14057055
      17
carb.
17085226
2194 HLY
*these were on the rear driver's side.  i haven't got the numbers off the rear yet, cause it looks like u would have to remove the carb?  can i tell anything from these?

what you have there is engine assembly date/suffix code and partial vin. the numbers your looking for are found at the rear of the block divers side.
i dont know what the 1 is from maybe a scratch?
but if it is and its the right number M would be for gm of mexico, 06 is June, 12 is the 12th day the 5vp should be the Suffix Code but i cant find anything on it. but get the numbers on the rear of the block and we can go from there.

Sometimes a picture helps , It will tough to get to and it's nearly always dirty back there . The carb can be left alone

i take it the pic is shown relative to the location, as in the rear driver's side?  how deep down is that step from the lip of the valve pan?  where i'm looking, there seems to just be flush sides all the way down from the edge of the valve covers on my motor?

It won't be easy . A man of my mature stature has to lay across the engine bay with a flashlight and fight the brake booster to see . just ahead of where the engine meets the transmission and directly above the oil filter
.

thank you, sir and boy was that not only fun, i also had to deal with cruise brackets that kept getting in the way.  lol.  i got 10066036 which pulled:

10066036
86-up
350
Car & Truck 2 & 4-bolt Passenger stick 1-piece seal

i also saw what appeared to be 5 characters that were illegible and then i believe "IN" and then definetely MEXICO.
is this something like simply as "mfgd. in mexico"

is there a way to easily determine the exact age of the motor as 86-up seems pretty generic and i'm trying to pull the specific year for something if possible?
