1985 Chevy C-10 Hot Rod Project

Hello everyone,
I am new to the site and this is my first post. In February 2013 I bought an 85 C10, I drove it to my Dad's shop (my Dad owns a paint and body shop) and the next weekend my Dad and I pulled the engine and transmission. It had a tired 350 with a Turbo 400. My intention for this truck is to build a nice little weekend hot rod. Over the next couple of weekends when I was off from work in Houston I would go home and work on tearing down the engine. I took the engine to Arrow Machine and had it hot tanked, bored .040, studded the mains and had them line honed, clearance for a bigger crank, replace cam bearings and freeze plugs, and install the crank, rods, and pistons. I went with a 4" 4340 Scat crank, 4340 Scat H-beams, and Mahle flat top pistons. With the stroke and bore it is now a 410 Stroker.

Welcome to the Forum from California!
You're off to a great start with that torquer motor! What are your plans for topping it off - cam, heads, induction?

I'm having trouble getting my pictures small enough to upload, I go to do the last dyno and pick up the engine Thursday. I got a custom ground Comp Cam Hydraulic Roller cam 238/244 @ .050 with .604" .614" lift using Comp Ultra Pro Magnum 1.6 rockers, Airflow Research 195cc competition heads that came assembled, Crane Hydraulic Roller Lifters, Edelbrock Performer RPM AirGap, Quick Fuel 850cfm Q-Series Carb, MSD Pro-Billet Distributor, Moroso Ultra 40 Plug wires, I think thats about it.

I had taken the truck down to the bare frame to repaint the frame with POR 15. Then I discovered the frame had the notorious cracks from where the steering box mounts to it. From reading on this forum I found out about a reinforcement plate and a reinforcement gusset kit, I bought both of them and ground all the cracks to a V and then drilled out the ends of them to keep them from cracking more. I then welded it all up and ground it smooth. One of the previous owners had tried to fix this but jerry rigged it, so that's why there is a big hole where one of the bolts go. I mocked up the reinforcement plate to fit and then cut some metal to fit where the big hole was then using the reinforcement plate as a template drilled out the big hole I patched so a bolt would go through. Then stitch welded the plate all the way around.

That plate and gusset should hold the box still! Take a close look at all of the shock mount holes, too. They are common fatigue points.
Overall, a very respectable build. Should be a lot of fun to drive. Post up the dyno results when they're in.

I looked over the shock mount holes and luckily they were in great condition. As for the motor I have right around $11,000 in it
the first time we dynoed it we got 575 HP and 574 TQ my builder ordered a carb spacer and jets to try some different combinations to hopefully get to 600 HP I'll post the final dyno numbers when we do it.

Here's what I got accomplished last weekend, I got my control arms, control arm cross shafts, springs, spindles, motor mounts, center link, and steering box painted with POR 15. I had the control arms and cross shafts taken to a local mechanic to install the Energy Suspension bushings while I'm away at work.

Got the engine back from the builder, final dyno was 581 HP, 577 TQ
Also got the contol arm bushings and bump stops installed.
Since Labor Day is this weekend I hope to get the frame painted with my extra days off of work.

Welcome. I've got a scat crank and KB heads, but am only putting out about 440 in my 383. The POR-15 looks realy nice, I think I will try it next time--I used Eastwood products on my first build, which got the job done as well.
