Muncie Transmission Oil Leak Questions...
« on: September 02, 2013, 12:52:29 pm »
Alright so here are the issues I'm having currently. My engine in my 1976 Chevy C10 is a 1958 283ci V8, now when I look at the manual transmission I have identified it as being a Muncie, but have yet to be able to pull any serial numbers off of the transmission to identify exactly what type of transmission it is by year and what not. So that would be my first question is where is the serial located on the transmission to better identify what I am working with.

Secondly, there were two oil leaks on the truck, one was from the oil filter, which I went and replaced to motor oil and oil filter this weekend and that has stopped, while I was doing that I took a look at the transmission, because the bell housing along with majority of the transmission is covered in oil, when I noticed that the lower right bolt that attaches the transmission to the bell housing wasn't even tightened all the way down, so I attempted to tighten it down but because of the way that the metal is formed around the transmission in that one spot, I was not able to properly get a socket or even a crescent wrench, 3/4", to fit around the nut to tighten it down tell it was secure. So with that being said is there a special tool on these older transmissions to tighten down the bolts that match up to the bell housing or am I just doing something wrong and the sockets should fit but for some reason they aren't?

Finally, since the transmission has been leaking oil, I know it takes 80w-90 oil for it, what is the proper way to go about topping off this oil once I have the oil leak fixed on the transmission so that way I can keep this truck up and running for awhile, since it is my daily driver to get to and from work.

There is a casting number on the passenger side of the main case. It is cast into the case not stamped.  As far as tightening the bolt.....does it look like the head of the bolt has sunken into the bell housing? Maybe a properly sized washer could fill the gap and allow you to get the wrench on it.

Remove the plug on the passenger side and fill with oil until it starts to dribble out then replace the plug.  I sometimes use a drill pump to get the oil in, if  space is limited. I got the drill pump from Sears, pretty cheap.
