i will say the northstar engine itself seems to run well.  It's all the electronics and such that i think are the problem ($$$).

Trouble is , As set up the electronics are what gives it the power and performance without them it will not run .  Besides have you seen where they put the starter on that thing??

That was the nicest car we ever owned. It had so many issues that plagued it the whole time we owned it! Loved the car, hated working on it. One by one the electrical problems started to suck my love for that car away. And the price of some of the parts for it where sickening. I was so done with it finally that I sold it for scrap. I bet the wife is still mad about scrapping her caddy to this day...

Starter is relatively easy to change out on these cars.  It's is under the intake manifold.  However, the intake manifold takes just a few minutes to remove.

Biggest issue with the Northstar engine is the head bolts pulling from the block and causing head gasket leaks.

Not really.  I've done this job in the parking lot once.  That said, I would rather change a starter on this engine than on a Chevy 350.

i thought in order to take the intake off, you have to take the air intake plenum off---which means you have to take a ton of vacuum hoses, sensors and other junk off?

Of course, now you need new intake gaskets......
